A MOMENT TO PAUSE • A CHANCE TO REFLECT • A WAY TO GIVE
HELP BUILD THE REFLECTION POOL

The Reflection Pool is a key feature of Kingwood’s ongoing Formal Gardens Restoration Project, honoring the site of Mr. King’s original swimming pool and transforming it into a serene, meaningful focal point within the gardens.

As we work together to make the Reflection Pool a reality, a place for peace and remembrance, we’re inspired by the stories and reflections shared with us. Each memory from our community is a reminder of how deeply Kingwood touches lives, just as the Reflection Pool will honor the beauty and connection that have always defined these gardens.

Why It Matters

The Reflection Pool will be more than a beautiful addition to Kingwood’s Formal Gardens. It will provide a beautiful garden space that invites curiosity, quiet reflection, and connection for every visitor.

This special project:

  • Celebrates the vision of Charles Kelley King, honoring the original design of the Formal Gardens while thoughtfully blending history with renewed vibrancy.

  • Offers a tranquil retreat, where visitors can pause, reflect, and enjoy a moment of peace amid the gardens’ beauty.

  • Encourages new memories and traditions, giving families, friends, and community members a space to create stories that will last for years to come.

A Vision for the Formal Gardens

In celebration of Kingwood’s 70th anniversary as a public garden in 2023, work began on an exciting multi-phase restoration of the Formal Gardens, one of the estate’s most iconic and historic spaces. Originally designed by landscape architects Pitkin and Mott in 1926, the gardens reflect the craftsmanship and artistry of the Arts and Crafts movement. The restoration aims to return the gardens to their appearance in the early 1950s, during the final years of Charles Kelley King’s life. Using historical records and original plant listings, the gardens are being carefully replanted to reflect the space's authentic design and character.

Since the project’s kickoff, steady progress has been made to restore these beloved gardens while improving accessibility, sustainability, and infrastructure. Over the past year, crews have installed new underground utilities, enhanced drainage and irrigation, and begun reconstructing defining features such as the Circle Pool, Sunken Garden, and connecting staircases. More than 300 new trees and shrubs have been planted, while sculptor Mike Major has worked to restore or recreate several of the garden’s iconic statues, including Lady of Gaillardias, Satyr, and The Herm of Pan.

This fall, major transformations have taken place. New wooden arbors now frame the entrances to the Sunken Garden, faithfully replicating the originals, and fresh bluestone pavers have been laid. Phase One is nearing completion and early work on Phase Two has already begun.

At the heart of this ambitious effort will be the Reflection Pool, a serene new centerpiece honoring the site of Mr. King’s original swimming pool. The Reflection Pool will serve as a place for peace and remembrance, a space that connects Kingwood’s past to its future while reflecting the countless memories made here for nearly a century.
