Since 1978, the Shelter has offered support, resources, and shelter to survivors. Our mission is to end violence and provide a safe haven for those who have survived it. Surviving violence in any form can be a lonely and isolating experience. But those who come to The Shelter can rest assured they are among friends. In fact, within our walls, a magical secret unfolds each night as a group of stuffed animal friends comes to life, each with a unique role to play, bringing comfort and assistance to residents and staff alike. Whiskers the Cat Answers the 24/7 Crisis Hotline with Compassion and Know-How

We offer a 24/7 Crisis Hotline (419-774-5840) anyone can call to find a supportive, compassionate, and helpful friend on the other end of the line. Tonight, that friend is Whiskers the Cat. She provides a listening ear and empathetic responses to those reaching out for help. Her quick typing and thoughtful words offer comfort and guidance, proving to be a lifeline for the many who call The Shelter in times of distress.

Freddie the Frog Cooks up Nourishing Food for Shelter Residents

The Shelter provides plenty of nourishing food to strengthen survivors on their healing journey. In the kitchen, Freddie the Frog jumps in to whip up delicious meals complete with heaping servings of love. His culinary skills turn simple ingredients into nourishing dishes that bring people together. With a chef's hat perched atop his head, Freddie hops to it, commanding the kitchen and churning out meals that give us all the feels!

Ellie the Elephant Ensures The Shelter's Cleanliness

In a cozy corner, Kylie the Koala is busy searching for housing options for those ready to move on from the Shelter to the next chapter in their lives. With her resourceful nature, she scours listings and makes calls, determined to find the perfect new home for every family. Kylie's dedication brings hope to those looking forward to a fresh start and gives them confidence that the support they get at the Shelter doesn’t end at the doorstep. The Shelter continues to care about survivors even after they’ve moved on from within our walls. 

No One Goes Hungry When Hazel the Hippo is Around Sometimes you just need a snack. Thankfully, Hazel the Hippo is taking charge of sorting snacks in the pantry. Her meticulous attention to detail means that every snack is organized and accessible, ensuring that residents always have a healthy selection to choose from. Hazel's cheerful attitude makes her a favorite among both children and adults. Everyone Finds Time for Self-Care and Practicing Peacefulness Every evening, all the stuffed animals gather for a calming yoga session. Under Shelley and Yo's gentle guidance, they stretch, breathe, and find mindfulness and tranquility amidst their busy routines. The yoga sessions are a cherished ritual for the animal friends because they offer an opportunity to move their bodies in a healthy way and foster a spirit of unity and relaxation.

Gizmo the Guinea Pig Makes Story Time a Can’t-Miss Event

Gizmo the Guinea Pig delights everyone with his evening story time sessions. His soothing voice and animated storytelling captivate the children at the Shelter, transporting them to worlds filled with adventure and possibility. He sends everyone to bedtime with happy thoughts and smiling faces.

Benny the Bear Gives the Best Snuggles

The embodiment of warmth and comfort, Benny the Bear spends many nights snuggling with children who need a little extra reassurance. His plush embrace chases away the shadows of fear and uncertainty. Benny's gentle presence is a source of peace for many, offering a silent promise of safety as everyone drifts off to sleep.
